Our First week in Rome, Italy

The first time we visited Rome seven years ago, we were gob-smacked to see the Coliseum and the ruins of the Roman Forum in it’s city center, the architecture, history, culture and natural beauty that surrounds it.

Over a few days we walked until we couldn’t take another step and were astonished at how much there is to see. This time we have eleven days to explore and have been able to get a better comprehension of the Eternal City. The more we see the more we are amazed by it, if you lived a lifetime here you’d never run out of something new to explore. You can’t describe Rome, you have to experience it. It is sensory overload, compounded by the throngs of tourists that overtake the city.

Rome has it’s menu of must see sites;  The Vatican and Sistine Chapel, The Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, The Spanish Steps, The Piazza Navona…most of which we checked off in a few days and even doable in a day.  But if you explore deeper some of the places you never heard off are the most spectacular like it’s churches which are dotted throughout the city more densely than we have Starbucks in Canada.

You don’t need to go to a museum, we spent $40 euros to go to the Borghese gallery but you can see equally impressive works of art for free, insitu where they were meant to be seen by some of the worlds masters for free in a church.  

Have a look at my video and you’ll see what I mean when we visited the Chiesa Sant’Andrea Della Valle one of the most beautiful churches you will ever see, smaller than the Vatican but so ornate.  Idol worship as my Protestant Grandmother used to say but these monuments truly make you feel a little closer to heaven.
