A Day at Doune Castle

A Day at Doune Castle
Doune Castle
Doune Castle

In the Stirling area another interesting Castle we totally enjoyed visiting was the Doune Castle which has been a popular filming location for movies such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones, Outlander and many others.  As you wander the castle grounds Actor/Director Terry Jones from Monty Python narrates the audio tour handed out at the castle entrance along with Outlander clips from Sam Heughan (James Frazer), Janet’s favorite parts!  They help bring to life the history surrounding the castle and add an ambiance as you make your way through the castle trying to remember scenes from the movies filmed here.

The castle was rebuilt after the Scottish Wars of Independence in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, the Duke of Albany (1340-1420).  The Castle passed to the crown in 1425 and was used as a royal hunting lodge and dower house.  In the later 16th century, Doune became the property of the Earls of Moray.  By 1800 the castle was ruined but restoration works were carried out in the 1880’s just before passing into state care no maintained by Historic Scotland.

Following a few hours at the castle we stopped on our way back home in the village, Bridge of Allan.  It’s a quaint village with some nice shops, restaurants, coffee shops and a bakery that we visited to grab some cheese and onion pasties for an afternoon nosh.

I finally managed some time to put together a video (nothing Emmi winning) but a chance to view our tour other than just photos. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks, it’s a bit shaky and I don’t think Rick Steves is too nervous about us yet but it’s a start!
